If you are not seriously engaged in exploring the questions below about God, Self, The World, The Cosmos, and Consciousness, what are you doing? It’s okay to say because anything you come up with is just what you have to row past before waves of real inquiry wash up against your mind. It takes an open and sincere heart to attract them and an indefatigable intent to take them on. Just row your boat out a short ways from the dock. You will be surprised at what is possible.
Most people are afraid of being on their own. We hold on to personal identities, programmed beliefs and practices, and institutional thought structures because we are afraid of Infinity. The dock is safer than the sea. It’s safe to approach these questions from inside the mind because whatever answers you come up with remain in the mind. You trade one mental structure for another and call it understanding. “Hi, Honey, I’m home. What’s for dinner?”
Human consciousness is awareness capable of entertaining a sense of self and maintaining a strategy for living in the world. How far such a being is willing to ride out to sea on waves of real questions is one of the deep mysteries of existence.
What is the Supreme Godhead and how shall I name it? Does this Supreme Godhead have form or is it pure spirit, the unformed Absolute?
Who am I? What is Self? What does the guru know? What is my soul and how shall I relate to it? How does my soul relate to God? Do I have free will? Does God’s will run everything?
What is the nature of the world I live in from day to day in time? Objective fact or perception? What drives the activity of the world? What should I do? Why do human beings suffer? What happens at death? What’s it all for? Where does all the energy come from? What is there to live for besides pleasure, power, and wealth? What is love?
What is the cosmos? Why is it here? What do cosmic beings do? Are “the gods” real? Why can’t I see them? How do I fit into the big picture? Who or what is running the show? What does it mean to be infinite?
What is consciousness? Is consciousness different from intelligence? What is the mind? How is it different from self? What are “higher states of consciousness?” How does consciousness relate to the Absolute? What is unbounded consciousness?
Even when we have managed to look up from our life stories and acknowledged the divine, have responded to the call from deep within to move forward in alignment with the divine will, there are the day-to-day movements within the karmic flux that are forever threatening to shunt us off into wayward paths of self-gratification and heroic charges into the saga of the collective consciousness as it lumbers along oblivious of what you know and what you are trying to keep alive in your psyche. How to keep that conversation with God in the foreground of your inner landscape? Sacred texts are always about something, but they are also the signal to the great beyond that you are ready to receive wider channels of the divine presence. This Conversation with Krishna wreaks havoc with the thinking mind, which is given an opportunity to bow down. When we finally bow down for keeps, the Lord is fully present in all that we do.
“A man exists on his own but for the abiding intent of the unknown at his back.”
“Only rare individuals have the strength to take a large immediate plunge straight into the sea of the Divine Infinity. Some therefore must choose as a starting point a concentration in thought or contemplation or the mind’s one-pointedness to find the eternal reality of the Self in them.” –Sri Aurobindo The Synthesis of Yoga
All forms of the divine, whether they originate in the history of the race, or in the deep imagination of a culture, or from the swirl of ideas in the wash of time—all so consecrated forms are gestures of the one Absolute Spirit, impulses of the Infinite Intelligence toward the awaking of that single individual who has turned head and heart in the direction of that truth. All other considerations aside, the seeker of God receives what he or she needs in the way of ascending to the path of truth, from which, through the faith and longing in the heart, there is no return, only eternal unfoldment.
Such a form is Lord Shiva. Worshipped for thousands of years through art, stories, chants, mantras, sutras, ceremony, pilgrimage, and face-on-the-floor surrender, this form of God is a doorway into the infinite for any individual willing to walk through it. Shiva brings his own gifts to the heart he floods with illumination. Divinity specific to this form is a storehouse of revelation. Satchitananda is his home. His earthly abode is atop Mt. Kailas in western Tibet. I know. I have visited the sacred mountain and circumambulated its base. I have touched the north face with mortal hands and have ridden the wave of inner transformation that has led me to this moment. Lord Shiva knows me and I Him. He is the essence of meditation, which is a dive into infinite silence, into consciousness without a thought, into existence before consciousness. I have meditated tens of thousands of hours at his feet. To know Shiva is to be awake to the Absolute. His image is fierce because making the inward turn takes courage that can only deity can provide. Cutting through the waves of infinity is serious business. Shiva is also infinite intelligence. His dance covers the entire cosmos. And, yes, too, “I am Shiva! Lord of Death!”. Om namah Shivia Om namah ShiviaOm namah Shivia
Caution is always advised when moving in the direction of the Infinite. A deity worshipped with an open and sincere heart acts as much as a protector as a revealer. On your own is not a safe passage; often the infinite roars like a giant waterfall getting louder as one clutches helplessly to one’s raft. What to do? A steady ascending passage is the gift of the Divine through the chosen deity. Such a deity is not a savior, but the divine uplift inherent in the spirit woven into the mind and heart of the awakening soul. The sadguru will bring the deity to life. Your Higher Self will guide you in its use.
The chant presented here is called the Shiva Gayatri. Gayatri is a rhythm, one of the most ancient rhythms of awakening in the human race. It was the most used by the ancient seers of the Rig Veda. All Gayatri mantras today use that rhythm and several key words. I have underlined those key words in the text below. The original Gayatri Mantra was an offering to the Solar Lord of this system and is the oldest known mantra in existence. It has been rendered today by many devotional singers. Devi Premal has recorded many Hindu devotional chants, the most beloved of which, I believe, is the original Gayatri Mantra. This audio is of me chanting the Shiva Gayatri for ten minutes:
Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe
Tanno Rudrah Prachodayat
Om, Let me meditate on the great Purusha,
Oh, greatest God, give me higher intellect,
And let God Rudra illuminate my mind
Purusha = the divine self, the invisible room, the indefinable;
Rudra = an ancient name for Shiva
The advantage of taking up a form of worship from outside of one’s home culture is that you can consciously determine how much of the cultural overlay you wish to participate in. The question is how much “debris” do you wish to row your evolutionary boat through on the way to infinity, where all forms burn up in the fire of life? In the privacy of my heart, I can feel the divinity of Jesus, but I would not proclaim that feeling to any others in my world without risking being defined in a way that I know I am not. Think of the mantra above as a tool, one of many possible tools, in this metaphor as an oar; think of the boat as your personal self; think of the river as the evolutionary movement in which your boat moves. When your boat begins moving on its own inexorably toward the goal, no need for the oar. Eventually no need for the boat. I believe in keeping it simple. Feel what it is. Touch the mystery of existence. Touch the mystery of you. The image above is my worship for you to see. The image below is my inner journey for you to see.
The Invisible Room, your divine Self, is infinitely deep. You and I exist on an infinitesimal wave of its knowing, learning to locate and accept that infinity when it decides that it is time for us to know, one person at a time, through the eons, and hopefully one day the race as a whole. It’s not an easy acknowledgement to make when we have been programmed to see the world through the darkened lens of the rational mind. But here we are.
These four audios were created for deep penetration outside the veils that shelter us from infinity. Our desire to know arises directly out of infinity, and if you want to travel into the deep mystery right off, these instruments will point you in directions you never heard of.
The images and words here exist primarily to delight the soul. There are personal stories, pictures of great beings who have given themselves to humanity for its uplifting, and even the final couple of minutes of a unique 1950s Sci-Fi movie, words that will stay with you if you enter into its consciousness. A good time will be had by all.
The mind always wants to know, but in the case of the Invisible Room, the mind has no dominion. Nevertheless, we live and move through the world with the mind pushing us here and there without any regard to the immanent and transcendent presence of the Invisible Room, God, the Absolute, Brahman, the Ultimate of What Is. These pages recognize the mind’s desire to know and my desire to help anyone who wishes to saturate his or her mind with the divine essence. Besides, the divine essence of knowledge is joy, ananda, bliss. So, take a deep breath and dive in.
Either after the initiation session in Section III of The Avatar® Course, or somewhere on the Section IV Master Course, a student begins to discover his or her own patterns of creation. It is quite a remarkable discovery and opens a very private and personal door to the templates of one’s own existence.
This is the path that awaits beyond the Avatar materials; it goes beyond Star’s Edge, and there are no maps and no footprints to follow. The final instruction, the last guidepost before the gate, which will appear to some as the blessing of source and to others as the curse of blame, says simply, “YOU are a more fundamental reality than any aspect the world can reflect!”
At this threshold, the uninitiated turn back to the world to “logic for explanations” and seek “reasons why.” But the trained Avatar student will pass beyond any need of instruction and directly experience the inexpressible that gives rise to the patterns that shape his or her existence. This plateau of awareness is quite a relief for the sincere seeker of enlightenment. From it, one sees how the actions and events of his or her life align with a higher consciousness desire to explore life’s potential.
It is with a mixture of amusement and amazement that one recognizes the incredible conservation of effort behind every life’s event and every changing moment to offer the perfect lesson for unfoldment. The struggles with life, the resistances and fixed ideas, are replaced by a willingness to experience and a natural alignment of one’s own efforts with the efforts of a higher universal consciousness.
This is undoubtedly what the great Chinese I CHING refers to as being in harmony with the Tao.
Without reflection or calculation, one acts in perfect harmony with the template of one’s own higher design. At last, there is the feeling that one is where one ought to be! There are no unpaid obligations, no accounts due. It is an end to the struggle between self and the world.
Beyond this is the final fulfillment of the deep, haunting desire to again exist as unity. It is the inseparable that one truly is, the no-boundary space that hosts the circus of life and death. It is the infectious gleam of joy in your own eye reflected in the Avatar Master’s eye. It is source awareness.
YOU are a more fundamental reality than any aspect the world can reflect!
Not from the world, but here, now, from this inexpressible beyond, arise the blueprints that determine one’s role in existence. Using the tools of Avatar one is, of course, free to modify and to continue to explore potentials…
An Avatar Master understands that beyond the lessons he can teach awaits a private and personal world path that only the self-honesty of his student can reveal. He does not burden nor comfort the student with his own or others’ belief systems. He does not delay the student with hidden fees in the form of worship, homage, enforced loyalties to a cause or enforce agreement with a creation. He asks for some form of currency for his service and nothing more.
The Avatar Master equips; the Avatar Master trains; the Avatar Master points; but then, the Avatar Master moves aside.
It is this ability of the Avatar Master to know when at last to step aside that makes the Avatar training so powerfully liberating.
